Project Winter is a free, open source horror point-and-click adventure game. The game centers around a group of researchers in an abandoned military science base in the middle of a brutal snow storm. Below the surface, a series of interconnected catacombs hold mysteries that will confound players through twists and turns into the end. It's not just about what's going on in the walls - there are things lurking beneath your feet which you must also be wary of. The aim was to create something unique and atmospheric with minimal use of graphics or sound effects, relying on player interaction for any shock factor. Project Winter includes no dialogue - instead, it relies entirely on exposition and exploration to tell its story. The game was developed by a team of eight, headed by Chris Winter. The development of the game took close to 4 years, and the last build was finished on January 14, 2014. The team consisted of 3 programmers (Chris Winter, Markus Böhme and Maximilian Habicht) as well as 5 on-site artists (Alice Hofer, Benjamin Thieringer and Wolfgang Wohlmuth along with two other guest artists). The first half of the game details the player's exploration of a derelict science base. Before long, the player discovers that the base is not as abandoned as they first thought. The second half centers around an underground system of tunnels occupied by a cult with mysterious goals. The story tackles concepts such as war, government conspiracy and mental illness. Project Winter had a positive reception from critics, getting a rating of 86% on Metacritic. It was praised for its atmosphere and voice-acting. It was also noted for its short length, though this was seen as an asset due to the high level of gameplay detail and interactivity available in its length. The game has been long since abandoned by the developers. Due to the lack of content and bugs that still exist in the game, there has been speculation that there will never be a release of Project Winter completely polished up.
